William "Bill" Miller

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father, William Joseph Miller, Bill, on Sunday December 15th, 2024. Bill was University of Miami’s first two time All-American (1960 & 1961) and the school’s first consensus football All-American in 1961 when he was selected by 6 national organizations as a First Team honoree. After the University of Miami, Bill went on to success in the NFL, most notably with the Oakland Raiders (1964-68). A member of Oakland’s 1967 AFL championship team, Bill scored two touchdowns in Super Bowl II. He played 66 career American Football League games with the Dallas Texans, Buffalo Bills and Raiders. He married his college sweetheart, Matie Carpenter, in Dallas and had four children. After retiring in 1968, he went on to be a receiver coach with Buffalo and then on to own two bars in Miami. He loved being his own kids’ coach in track and football, by doing things his way. To build endurance and strength, he had his kids push his big cars in neutral, down his neighborhood street. ;) Just one funny example. In 1988, he moved to St. Augustine with his love, Sharon Bowers. Bill enjoyed his retirement, with Sharon, at beaches, with friends and “Spinning the Wheel” at various bars on A1A. Sharon was Bill’s best friend in life and took great care of him till the very end. Bill is survived by his children, Kristina Petit, Tere Silva, Bill Miller Jr., Todd Miller, and step children Angela Mungovan, Cynthia and Greg Bowers and 12 grandchildren. Bill will be missed by his family and friends, as his presence was larger than life! He truly was the Big Bopper. He always repeated Paul Harvey’s quote… ”And You Know the Rest of the Story!”. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Bill’s memory to support Alzheimer’s research. Contributions can be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association dedicated to advancing treatment and finding a cure for this devastating disease.
