Thomas Joseph Collins

Thomas Joseph Collins, Jr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed community leader, passed away on July 21, 2024, in St. Augustine, FL, at the age of 88. He was born on January 25, 1936, in Yonkers, NY, the son of Thomas and Helen (Sloane) Collins. Thomas’ journey began with a distinguished service in the US Army, which instilled in him a lifelong commitment to discipline and leadership. Following his service, he pursued higher education, earning his Bachelor's Degree and completing coursework towards his Master's. Professionally, Thomas had a diverse and impactful career. He worked as an executive in manufacturing, contributing to a range of industries including shrimp boats, jet engines, and refrigerators. His career spanned notable companies such as General Electric, Whitaker Corporation, Desco Marine, and later, he partnered with Sterling Capital. Thomas was active in his community, serving as the head of the PTA at CPS and as a Trustee and Chairman of the Board of Flagler Hospital from 1981-1990. His leadership extended to his role as President of the St. Augustine Chamber of Commerce. Outside of his professional and civic endeavors, Thomas enjoyed a variety of interests. He was an avid collector of coins, genealogy, enjoyed golf, and was a lover of country music. He also enjoyed traveling, running and Jaguars football. Thomas is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Ellen (Lange) Collins. Together, they raised a devoted family, including their children: Amy York of Jacksonville, FL; Megan Collins of Daytona Beach Shores, FL; and Michael Collins of Gainesville, FL; grandchildren: Chris, John, Evelyn, Thomas, and Brendan Collins; Tyler Buckley; Kaitlin Davis; and Julia and Jordan Pacetti; great-grandchildren Madilyn, Cooper, Grace, Lily Claire, William, and Alaina; and his brother, Robert P. Collins of Charlottesville, VA. Thomas will be remembered for his unwavering love and commitment to his family, his ability to tell great stories and his hardy laugh. A memorial service celebrating Tom's life will be held on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024 at 9am at St Anastasia Catholic Church in St Augustine, FL. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Formation Center at St Anastasia Catholic Church.
