Ronald Ray Summerfield

In loving memory of Ronald Ray Summerfield, who passed away peacefully, and was born into eternal life on April 26, 2026, with his wife of 50 years, Mary Barbara, by his side. Ron was an avid diver, treasure hunter, and loved sailing with his family. He was a member of the Jacksonville Jetty Jumpers, one of the original diving clubs in Jacksonville, Florida. Ron also enjoyed rowing on the St. John's River while a student at Jacksonville University. He was also a member of the Sons & Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen. He was very proud of his great-great-grandfather, Captain Nathan Hanes, who operated the Sawmill Clipper, a type of steamboat planning mill on the Ohio River, which was based in Proctor, W Va. His great, great Uncles, Captain U. Grant Hanes and Captain T. Sherman Hanes, owned and operated The Ann Bailey, a side-wheel steam ferry out of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. He was able to identify approximately 20 steamboats that the family helped build, own, or operate. Clark Hanes, another relative, built cabins for steamboats out of Wheeling, West Virginia. Ron was a retired employee of Metal Container Corporation, where he worked for 37 years. Ron was a talented mechanic who could fix anything, and he loved taking his family camping. Ron and his wife, Mary Barbara, celebrated 50 years of marriage this year. Ron is survived by his loving wife, Mary Barbara (Jakubcewicz), son, Joseph, daughter, Donna (Ryan), and grandchildren, Serena, Jameson, Lucas, and Gabriel. He is also survived by his identical twin brother, Donald (Patricia), brother, Douglas (Mary), sister-in-law, Jean Summerfield, and daughter-in-law, Jen Summerfield, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He especially loved his cat, Frank. He was preceded in death by parents: Buel Wayne and Hilda Virginia Summerfield of Cross Lanes, W Va, paternal grandparents, Daniel Thomas and Edna Mae Summerfield of Long Bottom, Ohio, and maternal grandparents Oscar Stanley and Vausie Garnett Hanes, of Pliny, W Va.; brother: Stanley Summerfield of Buffalo, W Va, lifelong family friend, Lila Louise Vanderpool of Renick, W Va, and grandson-in-law, Seth Austin of Knoxville, TN. The Rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 11, 2026, at San Jose Catholic Church, 3619 Toledo Road, Jacksonville, FL 32217.
