Larry Vernon Davenport

Larry Vernon Davenport, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2023, at the Bailey Family Center. He was surrounded by his loving family and is survived by his devoted wife and high-school sweetheart, Pat, their sons Kevin (Heather), Gary (Vicki) and Chris, their daughter Karen Newsome, their cherished grandchildren Lindsey Upchurch, Scotty (Kayla) Beaver, Mallory Newsome, Reaghin (Robert) Boehnel and Marissa Newsome, and great grandchildren Sadie and Hadley Upchurch. Born in St. Augustine, Florida, to Wilford Jennings and Sarah Wahneeta Davenport, Larry led a life marked by dedication to his family, passion for his work and committed service to his country. He joined the United States Air Force in 1964 and married Pat in 1965. After leaving the Air Force, Larry became a reservist for the Florida Air National Guard and remained such until 1987. He showcased his craftsmanship at Desco Marine in a variety of capacities. Larry worked as an inspector for the St. Johns County Building Department, then transitioned to the St. Johns County Utility Department where he was a plan reviewer through his retirement. Larry's legacy is apparent in the strong work ethic he instilled in his children and in their mutual love for the great outdoors. As a lifetime member of the St. Augustine Boating Club, Larry was most content when he was on or near the water, fishing, pulling skiers, or teaching youngsters how to surf wakes. The best times were shared in the evenings, reflecting around a glowing campfire, roasting marshmallows and telling tales. His hands were skilled in all things mechanical, and his heart always found peace in nature's embrace. Larry never met a stranger and was gifted with the ability to draw anyone into a conversation. His warm smile and unwavering kindness will be dearly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched. In lieu of flowers and to continue his legacy of generosity, the family requests donations be made to Community Hospice Bailey Center for Caring. A graveside service will be held at San Lorenzo Cemetery on Wednesday, December 6th at 1:00PM to honor the remarkable man he was and the profound impact he had on everyone around him. Larry Davenport may have left this world, but his spirit, love and legacy will continue to inspire and resonate with all who had the privilege to know him.
