Jonathan Lee Williams

Jonathan Lee Williams, a devoted physician, teacher, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully from leukemia on June 3, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on September 26, 1940, in Milford, Delaware, Jonathan was the beloved son of Mildred and Arnold Williams. He grew up alongside his two older brothers, Arnold and David, in a family that instilled in him the values of service, dedication, and compassion that would define his life. An Eagle Scout in his youth, Jonathan demonstrated early on that leadership, integrity, and commitment to service would remain hallmarks of his character throughout his life. Dr. Williams pursued his passion for medicine at Jefferson Medical School, setting the foundation for a remarkable career devoted to caring for others and advancing medical education. He also proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a Battalion Surgeon with a Marine Battalion. Holding the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, he demonstrated both courage and commitment in service to a cause greater than himself. He married the love of his life, Christina Williams, on September 15, 1973, beginning a partnership grounded in deep love, laughter, and mutual devotion. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising three children—Jonathan, Christopher, and Jacqueline—who were the center of his world. Dr. Williams dedicated much of his professional life to pediatric radiology, first at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, where he developed a reputation as both an exceptional clinician and a gifted educator. Later, he moved to Gainesville, Florida, to join Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, where he would leave an enduring legacy. During his distinguished career, he served as Chief of Pediatric Radiology and achieved the position of Professor of Radiology with tenure. Over the course of his career, he mentored and taught more than 5,000 residents, inspiring generations of physicians with his knowledge, patience, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Truly a born teacher, he took great joy in sharing his expertise and helping others grow. A respected scholar and leader in his field, Dr. Williams authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. His research contributions have been cited more than 2,200 times by colleagues and researchers around the world, reflecting the lasting impact of his work on pediatric radiology and medical education. Known for his caring nature and generous spirit, Dr. Williams was deeply family-focused and valued time spent with those he loved. He also cherished the simple pleasures in life, including sharing a good beer and conversation with friends, creating lasting bonds and treasured memories. After several attempts at retirement, he ultimately settled in St. Augustine, Florida, where he embraced a well-earned slower pace of life. There, he enjoyed time with Christina and forged meaningful friendships within his community. Dr. Williams is survived by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Christina; his three children, Jonathan (wife Tricia), Christopher (wife Chrissy), and Jacqueline (husband Randy); and his seven cherished grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy. He also leaves behind a legacy of compassion, wisdom, service, and education that continues through the countless physicians he mentored, the students he inspired, the research he contributed, and the many lives he touched. He will be remembered as a caring physician, a passionate teacher, a devoted family man, a proud veteran, and a loyal friend. He will be laid to rest at Jacksonville National Cemetery in a private ceremony. A Celebration of his Life and an opportunity to honor his memory will be held for friends and family on July 17, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Johns Family Funeral Home located at 385 SR 207, St. Augustine, Florida 32084.
