Jerry Winkler

Jerry Winkler October 2, 1940 - April 18, 2016 Jerry “Juergen” Winkler, age 75, of St. Augustine, passed away on April 18, 2016 at Flagler Hospital surrounded by his family. Born and raised in Hamburg, Germany and moved to the United States with his family at the age of 12 to Dumont, New Jersey. In 1961, he moved to Florida to the Fort Lauderdale area where he was a field engineer with RCA. Jerry managed a computer school for several years, he was also Senior VP of Investments with Paine Webber. He was an investment broker for 18 years. He loved being outdoors he especially enjoyed fishing, skin diving, a member of the “Sea Sharks” and boating. He built model glider planes and was a member of the “Pompano Flyers Club” He suffered a disabling stroke in 2000; however, being a realist and a positive thinker, but knew he would not be able to do what he so loved prior to his stroke. He joined the Stroke Club at his hospital and was determined to “reinvent” himself. He inspired others that a new life could be had, no matter your disability. Jerry, since his move to Saint Augustine ten years ago, built bird feeders, model gliders and much more. Jerry was truly a man of all trades. He loved his friends dearly; they were as brothers to him, and since he was an only child, considered his wife, Susan’s, family as his own. Jerry was a very outgoing person and never met a stranger. When his wife asked him what he would want as his epithet, in the words of Jerry, himself, “I lived, I died.” He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Susan Winkler; brother and sister inlaws, Linda Castano (Tom), Viola Holmgren (Tony O’loughlin), William O. Holmgren III (Michelle Holmgren) David Holmgren (Chuck Mederios), Mary HolmgrenStabler, Joseph Holmgren (Katherine), Barbara Newman; nieces and nephews, Joseph, Sean, Sarah, Tilda, Zachary, Jessica, Jenny, Joey, Ruby, Joe, Analiese, Angelica.
