George John Zajewski

George Zajewski, 86, of St. Augustine, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at Community Hospice Bailey Family Center for Caring in St. Augustine. George was born in Joliet, IL to the late John and Josephine Zajewski. George led a life marked by service and devotion. He served his country honorably in the US Army before continuing his service as a civilian at the Rock Island Arsenal. His dedication knew no bounds as he transitioned to working for St. Johns County Parks and Recreation upon relocating to St. Augustine, Florida in 1986, where he served until his retirement. A man of faith and community, George was deeply involved in the church, notably dedicating many years to the Knights of Columbus. His commitment to his faith and community was matched only by his love for his family. In 1963, he married the love of his life, Maryhelen Zajewski (DesRosiers), in Moline, IL. Together, they shared a journey marked by love, dedication, and the joy of raising a family. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maryhelen Zajewski, daughters Suzanne Zajewski and Christine Dettlinger, and sister Joan Jaral. Though they have left this world, their memories will forever remain cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved them. He is survived by his daughters Diana Clark (Justin) and Melanie Unsworth (Brian), grandchildren Natalie Brown (Kevan), George Unsworth, Luca Unsworth, Dax Clark, and Cora Clark, and great-grandchildren Aidan Brown, Logan Brown, and Evan Brown. In this time of grief, the family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the incredible staff in MICU at Flagler Hospital and the Bailey Center for their compassionate care and support. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6175 Datil Pepper Rd, St. Augustine on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. Burial, with military honors bestowed by the U.S. Army, will take place at San Lorenzo Cemetery.
