Doris Irene Hondorf Doris Irene Hondorf peacefully left this world on July 19, 2026, at the age of 90. She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her daughter, Robyn Polanco; her granddaughters, Alexandra Ainscough and her husband, Richard, and Victoria Warenik; her precious great-granddaughter, Birdie Ainscough; her stepsons, Derek Hondorf and his wife, Denise, and Lars Hondorf; and her beloved grandchildren, Alana, Anna Marie, Ava, Loki, Tyr, and Vidar. Born on January 10, 1936, in Cleveland, Ohio, Doris was the daughter of Robert and Irene Schmotzer and the beloved sister of Donald Schmotzer, who preceded her in death. After graduating from West Technical High School, she earned degrees from The Ohio State University and Cleveland State University before beginning her career as a physical education teacher and later serving as a high school guidance counselor. Adventure was woven into Dori’s life. She and her husband, John Hawley, spent four memorable years sailing throughout the Bahamian Islands before making St. Augustine their home in 1982. There they purchased St. Augustine Yacht Sales while Doris continued her counseling career at the St. Augustine Center for Living. Following John’s passing, she later married Eugene “Gene” Hondorf, with whom she shared more than twenty-two years of happiness, travel, family, and friends, until his passing in 2019. A lifelong learner, she was a Water Safety Instructor Trainer, earned her United States Coast Guard captain’s license, embraced Tai Chi for more than forty years, and loved sailing, golf, bridge, euchre, music, arranging flowers, and entertaining friends. As Past President of the EMMA Guild of St. Augustine, she helped bring exceptional musical performances to the community she loved. The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at the Bailey Family Center for Caring for the kindness, dignity, and comfort they provided during Doris’s final days.
