Cheryl May August 3, 1955 - July 27, 2025 Cheryl May, age 69, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. She was born on August 3, 1955, in Nashville, Tennessee, to parents Herbert and Mary "Lois" Moore, and moved to Florida at the age of two. Cheryl was raised in Jacksonville, where she built a life rooted in love, family, and service to others. Cheryl attended Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ). She met the love of her life Jerry May Sr. in Jacksonville Beach, and together they built a family that was her pride and joy. She began her early career at the Clay County Family YMCA and later found her calling in the medical field, working as an Office Manager. Her final professional role before retirement was with Florida Neurosurgery in Jacksonville. She was the devoted mother of three children born in Florida: Jerry May Jr., Jennifer May (who preceded her in death), and Jaime Cope. She was also a loving mother-in-law to Donnie Cope Jr. and a proud grandmother to Bryce Cope (with wife Michelle Cope), Dawson Cope, and Olivia Cope. Cheryl was excitedly awaiting the birth of her first great-grandchild, a baby girl due soon. Cheryl is survived by her brother Jerry Moore Sr., and by her sister, Sandra McLendon, and brother-in-law, Carl McLendon. She was preceded in death by her beloved late husband Jerry May Sr. and her brother, Herbert “Ray” Moore. She had a large extended family full of nieces and nephews, each of whom she cherished deeply. A breast cancer survivor, Cheryl was a beacon of strength and resilience. She remained actively involved in walks and fundraisers in support of breast cancer awareness and research. Cheryl loved the simple joys of life—being with family and friends, sailing to the Bahamas, vacationing in the mountains, painting, spending time at the beach, gardening, and the holidays. Her happiest moments were those spent surrounded by the people she loved most. Her warmth, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family and community will be missed beyond measure. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 5, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Johns Family Funeral Home. All who knew and loved Cheryl are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a breast cancer awareness organization of your choice, in honor of Cheryl’s brave journey and generous spirit.
