William E Hofmann

William E. Hofmann, 83, St. Augustine, passed away January 12, 2021 at Flagler Hospital. He was born August 27, 1937 in Alton, IL, son of the late William A. and Dorothea Hofmann. He graduated from Alton High School and then listed in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married his wife, Sharon in 1957 and together they raised two daughters, Ann and Christine. Bill worked full time and also attended Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville full time. Bill graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Physics. He worked for Owens Illinois in Alton. IL and Toledo, Ohio for 38 years holding the position of Engineering Group Leader at the time of his retirement. Bill traveled extensively during his working years and after his retirement traveled to 47 states, 37 countries (some numerous times), and 5 continents. He played and enjoyed watching tennis as well as following most other sports. He also loved music especially all forms of jazz and classical. He and his wife Sharon loved to cruise and travel. Throughout his life he played bridge and became a Life Master at age 46. Bill played tournament bridge, taught hundreds of students, mentored 7 players, chaired 5 Sectional tournaments and wrote a weekly local bridge column for the St. Augustine Record for 10 years and was a Ruby Life Master. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sharon Hofmann; two daughters, two granddaughters, and two great-grandchildren. St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
