June 8, 1933 - January 13, 2022
Vivien Gould (Cowart) Nemecek (88) passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 13, 2022 after struggling for years with Alzheimer’s disease. Vivien grew up in St. Augustine and played at Castillo de San Marcos, across the street from where her mother had a gift shop. She moved to Savannah, Georgia when her mother remarried and attended a finishing school there. Then she completed a bachelor's degree in education at Georgia Southern Teachers College. She returned to teach in St. Augustine where she met and married Walter Nemecek, who was stationed at Green Cove Springs Navy base. After he left the Navy, Walter and Vivien moved to Georgia for Walter to complete his college education, and their family grew quickly. Later, they returned to St. Augustine. Vivien was a highly regarded 1st grade teacher at R. B. Hunt Elementary School for several decades. After retirement, she volunteered teaching adults to read as well as delivering meals to the elderly and needy, until her illness forced her to stop. She also gave generously of her time at the Lightner Museum. A devout Christian, she was a long time member of Community Bible Church and occasionally attended McDowell Baptist Church. She usually took non-drivers to church services. She enjoyed singing in the choir and other Christian music activities. She was a beloved presence in her neighborhood and often greeted people while out walking with her dog. Her greatest joy was helping people, and she spent her life doing that. Vivien dearly loved and was deeply loved by her family. She worked hard to help her family members and to make special moments in all of their lives. She was generally smiling and had a joyful laugh, even in her last days. Her parents were Theodore Austin Cowart Sr. and Graynella (Bond) Cowart. Her siblings were Theodore Cowart Jr., Preston Cowart, and Priscilla (Cowart) High. She was also preceded in death by her son, Christian Bond Nemecek (Helga). Her other children are Walter John Nemecek Jr. (Marcia), Frances “Nelle” Nemecek, and Marvin Mark Nemecek. Her grandchildren are Walter Nemecek III (Rachael), Katrina Nemecek, Marc Nemecek (Jillian), Joel Nemecek, Nathan Nemecek, Krysten (Nemecek) Call (Jonathan), Nicholas Nemecek (Carey), and Kaitlyn (Nemecek) Strauss (Alexander), Ian Nemecek (Samantha), Christian “Kayo” Nemecek, Samuel Nemecek, Daniel Nemecek, Hanna Nemecek, Jason Phillips, Jeremey Phillips, and Jessica (Phillips) Willis (Ethan). She had 35 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. All will miss her very much!
