June 23, 1923 - December 12, 2021
Mary Jean (Worley) Martin, 98, of Moultrie Oaks retirement community in St. Augustine, FL, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2021, at the Bailey Family Center for Caring. Mary Jean was born on June 23, 1923, in Fairmont, WV to the late Robert and Diana (Griffiths) Worley and was pre-deceased by brother William Worley and sisters Frances Petres and Margaret Smay. Mary is survived by her loving husband, Donald Martin. She has left to treasure her memory (and antics) daughters; Diana Nash, Rensselaer, NY; Mary (late Howard) Acker, Culpeper, VA ; Patricia (Bruce) Weidman (West Sand Lake, NY); sons, Thomas (Danine) McShane (West Sand Lake, NY) and Robert Michael McShane, Greentown, PA; step-daughters; Donna Stears, and Janice (William) Phelan of St. Augustine, FL. Mary was the very proud Gram of Douglas Nash, Daniel Walker, Colleen Barber, Robert Walker, Brian (Nicole) Acker, Victoria (Daniel) Bowers, Pamela (Cory) Foppiano, Bruce Weidman, Jr., Rachel (Philip) Matthews, Devin McShane, Daniel McShane, Carli McShane and the late Matthew Weidman. She is also survived by 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, and a future great, great grandchild expected in March. As a young girl in Fairmont, “Rink” as she was known, enjoyed roller skating, swimming in the Monongahela River, getting into mischief of every kind and parading as a majorette with the Fairmont High School marching band. Upon graduation, she moved to Washington, DC to support the war effort as a telephone operator. After the war, Mary moved to Long Island, NY to raise her family, then relocated to Nassau, NY where she was a member of the Nassau Hose Company ladies’ auxiliary. Mary adored her large family and she reigned over many loud and lively gatherings, earning her the title of Queen Mum. After retiring from Key Bank, NA, Mary relocated to St. Augustine, FL, where she met Donald. Together, they enjoyed wonderful vacations to Hawaii, Alaska, and Mexico, as well as many locations up and down the east coast. For many years, Mary was very active in the Moultrie Oaks community association and a proud member of the Red Hats club. Mary was proud of her English heritage and West Virginia roots; she loved Christmas and was not ashamed to admit that she opened her gifts ahead of time and rewrapped them so no one would know. She was known for her Christmas fudge, potato salad and delicious Cheesecake (which, after many years, she confessed was home baked right out of the box). Mary’s many hobbies were sewing, crocheting, bowling, painting ceramics, crafting, and reading. Her family will forever hold close to their hearts the many warm memories of happy times spent with this strong, sassy, fierce lady. Heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful compassionate caregivers at Baptist Health, River Gardens and Bailey Family Center, as well as our family nurse practitioner, Danine McShane, for guiding us through the last few weeks. A celebration of Mary’s life and legacy will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at St Johns Family Funeral Home located at 385 State Road 207 St. Augustine, Florida 32084.
