February 13, 1956 - November 6, 2021
Mark died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 6, 2021. Miraculously, the Gamecocks won at nearly the exact moment. Mark was known as a family man, and to many of us, simply dad, brother, cousin, or friend. To some, he was known as the man, and even Bill Nye, the Sno Cone Guy. He was famous for giving you “ones,” two in the eyes, his infectious laugh, and his best friend, Larry the Lobster. Mark had a way of making instant friends with strangers, and he always made you feel special. He loved all of his friends and family deeply. Most of all, he loved his daughter Meredith. He was her biggest cheerleader and confidant. When he was near, there was no shortage of laughter due to his array of dad jokes. Mark was also a sports fanatic. Perhaps Grandpa Harts first ignited the love by taking Mark to wrestling at the township auditorium. Indeed, this love was entrenched when Mark had his best basketball game ever during his bar mitzvah week, going 8 for 8 from the right corner to lead his JCC team over St. Martins, gaining him entry into the shortest book of all time, Great Jewish Athletes. Without a doubt, there was no better fan of all the beleaguered teams of his family and friends, especially the Mets, AC Flora Falcons, Gamecocks, American Eagles, Capitols, and Lions everywhere. The NCAA Tournament, Little Feat, Saturday Night Live, and Seinfeld reruns will miss you. Sports celebrities everywhere hoped they could sign one more autograph for you. And indeed, Howard wishes he could bring you one more Diet Coke. We love you, Mark. Mark was dedicated to helping cure type one diabetes. In place of flowers, consider a donation to JDRF Northern Florida Chapter in his name at JDRF.org/Memorial. Or you can mail a gift to JDRF, 1850 Lee Road, Suite 132, Winter Park, FL 32789. Please join us at the beautiful Washington Oaks State Park to celebrate the life of Mark Kaffee on Sunday, November 21 at noon.
