David Anthony "Tony" Poppen

David Anthony ”Tony” Poppen, age 82, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2022 at the Bailey Center for Caring. He was born to Matthew and Mae (McDonough) Poppen on October 21, 1939 in Fairfax, Virginia. Tony was a firefighter for many years and served as an aid to the Chief in Washington, DC. He loved offshore fishing aboard his boat named “The Early Bird” in Hatteras, NC. He received many citations for biggest catch and many tournament trophies for his Freshwater Bass and Rainbow Trout catches. His custom-made Sea Witches are available in in many bait shops including his favorite shop, Beamish Custom Tackle. He had been a resident of St. Augustine since 1989 and was a longtime member of the Cathedral Parish in St. Augustine where he attended mass often. He is survived by his wife, Constance “Connie” Brand Poppen of St. Augustine FL.; his stepdaughter, Leslie Alday of St. Augustine; brothers, Thomas Poppen of Ocala, FL and Paul Poppen of Bronson, FL; and grandchildren, Madison Alday, Austin Witt, and Leah Witt. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
