Alton Cox, 95, passed away Sunday, May 1 at Daytona Beach Health and Rehab. He was born in Cairo, Georgia to Alexander Cox and Jessie Lee Hasty on August 21, 1926. He attended the West Augustine School. He served as an Army Mechanic in WWII. Upon return from duty, he worked at his father’s tire shop as a tire capper. Later he worked as an aircraft mechanic for Fairchild Aviation before coming to own and run the Shell Service station on US1 south of King Street with his wife until retirement in 1979. Al was well known for dominating the local raceways in his T-11 and P-38 stock cars throughout the 1950s and 60s. He is survived by his daughter Brenda Stilwell (Rodney), granddaughter Amanda Smith (Beau), and one brother, Marvin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Effie; parents, Alexander and Jessie; brothers, Albert “Red”, Thomas, Floyd, and Larry; and sisters Inez, Mildred, and Thelma. A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, May 11th at 5:00 pm with a viewing beginning at 4:00 pm at St Johns Family Funeral Home. The funeral home is located at 385 State Road 207 St Augustine, Florida. St Johns Family Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
