Robert William Smith

Robert William Smith May 2, 1937 - July 12, 2009 Robert William "Bob" Smith, age 72, of St. Augustine died on July 12, 2009 at Moultrie Creek Nursing & Rehab Center. Bob was born in the Bronx, N.Y and grew up in the Bronx and Staten Island, N.Y. He traveled and lived in many different places including: the Florida Keys, Ft. Lauderdale and California during the 1960's and early 1970's, returning in between to Staten Island, New York. He discovered St. Augustine by happenstance, when he and his wife June were sailing from New York to the Keys and docked at Camachee Cove to re-supply. Bob and June fell in love with St. Augustine and have lived here since 1980. Bob served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy Reserves and worked as a Union carpenter in New York City for many years. Upon moving to St. Augustine he worked and supervised many construction projects in the area and owned and operated Seafood Plus, a bait & tackle shop and fresh seafood store in Crescent Beach. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years of marriage, June Lee Smith of Treasure Beach; two daughters: Lynn Ann Wells and Christine Lee Curry, both of St. Augustine; three grandchildren, Tiffany Pope, Melissa Popailo-Napier and Michael Paczkowski, all of St. Augustine; two great-grandchildren, Trowa Sai and Tye Robert; a " brother", Michel "Mickey" Schaffner of Hurley, N.Y.; a " sister", Elizabeth "Betty" Schaffner of Staten Island, N.Y; and four nephews, Terrence Collins, Kevin Collins, Scott Schaffner and Glenn Schaffner and three grandnieces and two grandnephews. Bob's passions were gardening, cooking and his grandest was - fishing; he passed these passions on to his daughters and grandchildren who adopted them wholeheartedly. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at St. Johns Family Funeral Home. A visitation of family and friends will be held on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until the hour of the service. Flowers are gratefully declined, but those wishing may make a donation to the American Cancer Society or National Wildlife Association. St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
