Richard Lyle "Dick" Opozda

Richard "Dick" Lyle Opozda, 85, of St. Augustine, FL, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023. Born on December 29, 1937, Richard, known affectionately as “Dick”, loved his adopted hometown but previously lived in Pompano Beach, FL, as well as in California. Dick proudly served in the U.S. Air Force as a young man, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his country. He was a multifaceted man, excelling in various fields throughout his career. Dick was an electrical and general contractor, but he also dedicated his time as a licensed professional social worker and volunteered many hours in that capacity, making a positive impact on the lives of many. Outside of his professional life, Dick had a passion for cooking, which led him to attend culinary school. He delighted in creating delicious meals for his loved ones, especially his appreciative wife. In addition, he enjoyed good music, playing golf, and tending to his garden. Most recently, Dick enjoyed volunteering with Flagler Hospital and Pie in the Sky, where he delivered meals to many. These hobbies brought him joy and allowed him to express his creativity and love for the outdoors and his fellow human beings. Dick is survived by his step-daughters: Laura Martin (Joseph), Mary Beth Purchase (Edward), Kate Dowdie (Stephen), and Sarah Stone (Matthew), his daughter-in-law, Lisa Opozda, as well as his 11 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind the family of his heart, Eric Gobbie (Diane) and Eve Janocko (Joseph). Dick was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edie Opozda, and his son, Lyndel Opozda. A celebration of Dick’s life will be held on Dec. 30th at 6:00 pm at the Officers’ Club, St. Francis Barracks, located at 82 Marine Street, St. Augustine, FL 32084. This gathering will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and acquaintances to come together and pay their respects to a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many. The family requests that attendees wear a “trouble shirt” in his honor - better known as a Hawaiian shirt. The favor of an RSVP to dowdiek@bellsouth.net would be appreciated.
