Rand Marshall Middleton

Rand Marshall Middleton, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away after a courageous battle with stage 4 small cell carcinoma, first diagnosed in April 2025. Rand was born on March 16, 1954, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Margaret Mae (Morton) Middleton, who preceded him in death on February 4, 1971, and Harry Carson Middleton III, who preceded him in death on March 21, 2009. He was also predeceased by his older brother, Harry C. Middleton IV, who was four years his senior and passed away on January 2, 2025. Rand fell in love with the game of golf as a small child, growing up with his family as members of the Waynesboro Country Club on Philadelphia's Main Line — a passion that would go on to shape much of his personal and professional life. Following high school, Rand enlisted in the United States Navy, serving four years at the tail end of the Vietnam War, stationed in the South Pacific. His service included duty as an anti-submarine air controller, as well as work in detection and tracking and radio operations. He achieved the rank of OS2 and was awarded the Navy "E" Award before being honorably discharged in 1978 following his final duty assignment aboard the USS Jouett. After his service, he returned home to pursue his education, graduating from Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA, in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Rand went on to build a career in golf course development and project management, work that reflected the lifelong love of the game instilled in him from childhood. Among his professional accomplishments, his most cherished project was his work on the creation of the prestigious Stonewall Golf Club in Elverson, PA, a project into which he poured all of his passion and energy. Later in life, he found what felt like a true calling when he took root in St. Augustine, Florida, in the mid-2000s, transitioning into the world of sports talk radio. For more than 20 years, Rand became a familiar and beloved presence in the St. Augustine Beach community of St. Johns County. Known for his work in sales at AM ESPN Radio and as the longtime host of his own show, "Sports Talk at Random" — a fitting play on his name — Rand was, by all accounts, quite the character, known for his sharp wit and his gift for making those around him laugh. He built deep friendships and treasured his active social life among the many like-minded friends and community members he came to know and love in St. Augustine. Rand also maintained strong, lasting friendships with people across the country, keeping close connections with friends in Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Jacksonville, Florida, throughout his life. Above all, Rand adored his daughter, Ashley. Rand married in 1980, and though the marriage later ended, he and his then-wife welcomed their daughter, Ashley, in 1982. Though Rand and Ashley lived many miles apart, the two spoke at least once a week for as long as Ashley can remember, a testament to the closeness they shared throughout his life. Rand is survived by his daughter, Ashley Middleton Fronheiser (43), and his two grandsons, Brody Adam Fronheiser (17) and Macsen Baer Fronheiser (9). He is also survived by his younger brother, Jeffrey Middleton (70), and his younger sister, Wendy Toner (67). Rand was loved deeply by those who knew him best, and he leaves behind a legacy as a truly unforgettable guy whose presence will be dearly missed.
