Peter Charles Schuhl

Peter Charles Schuhl, 79, of St Augustine passed away Saturday, November 30, 2019 at the Bailey Family Center for Caring in St Augustine, Florida. Peter was born on December 23, 1939 in Schenectady, New York to Robert Schuhl and Ethel Schuhl (Richelieu). He spent his youth in the Schenectady/Scotia area and joined the US Navy and served our country honorably for 26 years before retiring as a Lieutenant. Peter was very patriotic and loved his country. He came from a long line of men in his family who also served our country. Peter moved to Florida following his retirement from the Navy and St Augustine became his home. He became a professional driver after retirement, driving buses for St Joseph Academy, Annette bus line and driving trolleys for St Augustine Historical Tours. Peter loved the city of St Augustine and its history and charm. Even after he stopped driving for the tour company, he would take visiting family and friends for their own personal tours of the city. He would often joke with his guests that they owed him $50.00 for the tour. Peter lived in Spanish Trail Mobile Home Manor for 30 years. He was known in the community as “The Mayor”. He would keep the residents informed of life in the community as he wrote and published a monthly community newsletter. Peter loved dogs and would carry dog biscuits wherever he went. The dogs would recognize him as he approached and would wait for their treats. Peter also loved children and always made time for them. He was an avid sports spectator; especially hockey and would often joke how he “went to a fight and a hockey game broke out!” He is survived by his daughter Karin Plitt (Stanley) of Satsuma, FL; son, Robert Schuhl of Fredericksburg, VA; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him greatly. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Robert and William Schuhl. A memorial service with Reverend Glen McCutcheon officiating will be held at St Johns Family Funeral Home 385 SR 207 St Augustine, FL on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow at Spanish Trail Mobile Home Manor. Peter’s ashes will be interred at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY at 2:00 pm April 24, 2019. He will receive full military honors. St Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
