Kenneth Elwyn "Ken" Wetherington

Kenneth Elwyn "Ken" Wetherington, age 80, of St. Augustine, passed away on February 16, 2024 at his home in St. Augustine, FL. Ken was born on August 21, 1943 in Jacksonville, FL the only child born to parents Julian and Lida Wetherington. He grew up in Jacksonville and was a 1961 graduate of Andrew Jackson High School. After graduating from high school, Ken worked for Ryder Freight Company and Volkswagen. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed at Blount Island in Jacksonville for 6 years. For many years Ken worked as a warehouseman for the Ford Motor Company in Jacksonville and Atlanta. The most significant and life changing event that happened during this time is that he met the love of his life, Vickie Strong, who was a co-worker at Ford. Ken married Vickie on August 28, 1981 and from then on he was affectionately referred to as "Roevich" by his bride. Ken and Vickie started their married life in Neptune Beach and Jacksonville and moved to Henry County, Georgia where they raised their family and lived for 28 years. Ken retired from Ford in 2005 and had been a resident of St. Augustine since 2015. Ken was a strong Christian and had a great sense of humor. He evolved during his life from an introvert to someone who could talk to anyone. "Simple", "Grumpy Old Man" and "the Meanest Uncle in the Whole Wide World" were terms of endearment from those who were closest to him, but he was deeply loved by everyone he met. Ken was a "Jeep Man", complete with a row of rubber ducks on the dash and the beach was his happy place. More than anything, Ken was a loving husband, father and friend to many and he will be deeply missed. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Vickie Wetherington; a son, Andrew Wetherington and his wife Melissa of Brigantine, NJ, and a daughter, Julianne Russell and her husband Liam of Cartersville, Ga. A funeral service will be held at 3 pm on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at St. Johns Family Funeral Home with Ken's brother in law, John Depontes officiating. A visitation, beginning at 2 pm will precede the service.
