Karen P. Cossio

Karen Powell Cossio , age 71, of Miami, Florida passed away peacefully on September 16, 2021 at her home in St. Augustine with her family by her side. Karen was wife to Raul Jorge Cossio; mother to Rachel Fink and Robert Cossio; and grandmother to Emily Gash. She was a mother-in-law to Esther Cossio and Justin Fink; a sister-in-law to Evelio and Jane Cossio; and an aunt to their children, Kevin Cossio and Marissa Rivero. Karen considered Kathy Lee and Becky Moore to be the sisters she never had, (Proverbs 17:17). Karen was born in Miami, Florida on October 12, 1949 to her parents, Robert Horace Powell and Mary Jean Powell. While much of her childhood was spent in a religiously divided home, Karen made a firm stand for her personal beliefs from a very young age. Together with her spiritually strong and loyal father, her mother was eventually, "won without a word” (1Peter 3:1), and they each served faithfully as Jehovah's Witnesses 'til the end of their lives. Through high school and beyond, Karen served as a Regular Pioneer--this is a volunteer teacher of the Bible who pledges to spend a certain number of hours monthly educating those who are interested in learning about the scriptures. She spent time preaching in Manning, South Carolina with Cara Lee Daboll and in Dallas, Georgia, with Becky and Davie Rogers and always spoke of how much she treasured those memories and experiences. In May of 1971 Karen and Raul Cossio got married and went on the start their own family. First, she became a mother to Robert and five years later she became a mother to Rachel. And for the next many years, she supported her family's needs-- whether it was cooking and cleaning up after everyone or dropping forgotten homework assignments off at school or taking Raul his wallet he forgot at home, AGAIN--she was always ready to help in any way she could and she carried on these motherly tasks even long after the kids left home. One of the things Karen cherished most in life was her life-long friends. While life takes us in different directions and sometimes it's impossible to keep up with those most important to us, she never forgot those who shaped and enriched her life over the years. Karen could recall memorable events and funny stories with such detail, you would swear you experienced it with her! Animal adoptions and pet rescues were near and dear to her heart. Over many decades, the Cossios rarely owned a pet that wasn't rescued from the middle of Flagler Street or from a neglectful pet owner. When Karen was unable to personally care for anymore animals, and as her health was declining, she still insisted on supporting local rescuers. She eagerly looked forward to the time promised in the Bible where humans would harm neither each other nor the animals anymore. (Isaiah 11:9) Karen had a firm belief in the promise of a time with no more illness, just as promised at Isaiah 33:24 where it says, "And no resident will say, 'I am sick.' The people dwelling in the land will be pardoned for their error." So, while her long battle with cancer came to a close on September 16, 2021, she fell asleep assured that Jehovah God would fulfill his promises of a healthy life on a paradise earth surrounded by her friends and family and all the animals she could ever want to see.
