June Lee Smith

June Lee Smith August 11, 1937 - July 28, 2013 June Lee Schaffner Smith, age 75, of St. Augustine, passed away on July 28, 2013 at the Bailey Family Center for Caring, surrounded by her family. Born and raised in Staten Island, New York, June graduated as Valedictorian of her high school class at the age of 16 and began working for Mobil Oil, later as a legal secretary on Wall Street. She was also owner of a Sea Food Market / Bait & Tackle Shop in Staten Island. As extensive travelers, June and her late husband, Bob, would take trips to upstate NY and the Florida Keys. On one of their many journeys south, while docking to re-fuel their 28 foot cabin cruiser, they discovered Camachee Cove in St. Augustine and it was "love at first sight", they never left. June worked as a Chef at Capps on the Water in Vilano Beach when it first opened, where she was affectionately known as "June Bug". June was a spiritual person who, as a 15 year survivor of pancreatic cancer, was involved in the American Cancer Society Relay Walk for Life. Hobbies that she enjoyed included a deep interest in the American Indian culture, nature and gardening, genealogy, playing Canasta and a passionate loyalty to the Jacksonville Jaguars football team. Above all, June was a devoted mother and grandmother, and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert William "Bob" Smith. She is survived by daughters, Lynn Wells and Christine Curry, both of St. Augustine; sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Schaffner, companion, John of Staten Island, NY; brother, "Mickey" Schaffner companion, Linda, of Kingston, NY; granddaughters, Melissa Popailo-Napier, and husband, James, and Tiffany Pope, and husband, Wilson; grandson, Michael Paczkowski; and three great-grandchildren, Trowa, Tye and Warh. A memorial service will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at St. Johns Family Funeral Home, with Rev. Clarence Blalock officiating. A visitation, beginning at 6 p.m., will precede the service.
