Joan M Sawinski

It is with great sadness, but also with a spirit of joy that we announced the passing of Joan Marilyn (Quinn) Sawinski on August 4, 2024. She was a resident of River Garden Senior Services in Jacksonville, Florida. She was a member of Saint Anastasia Catholic Church in Saint Augustine, Florida. Joan was born on December 9th,1932 in Milan, Michigan to the late John and Mary Quinn. After graduating from high school in Saginaw, Michigan she earned a teaching degree from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her first job was teaching elementary students in a one room school house. Joan dedicated her life to nurturing young minds and was deeply devoted to her family. She took great joy in raising her children often sharing their love of fishing and exploring with them. Joan’s passions extended beyond family life. She enjoyed ceramics, solving New York Times crossword puzzles, and teaching literacy courses to adults. Her community spirit was also evident in many years of volunteer work with Meals on Wheels. She cherished being a homemaker, but after the children moved out, she held several jobs, including working with the Gallup organization in Princeton, NJ. She had a profound love for travel, with Italy and Ireland being among her favorite destinations. Joan loved being the wife of Jack for 68 years and the mother of 5 children, Joe, Jim, John, Jeffrey, and Jana. She had 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren with one more great-grandson on the way. She was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Paul Sawinski and her granddaughter, Laura Joan Sawinski. Her family will be forever grateful to the staff of the memory care unit. At River Garden the warmth, compassion, and friendship received over the past 7 years could not have been better. We rejoice in knowing that Joan is now with her savior. A memorial service in honor of Joan's remarkable life will be held at a later date Saint Anastasia Catholic Church in Saint Augustine. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to River Garden Foundation in her memory. Joan's legacy of love, dedication, and faith will forever remain in the hearts of her family and all who knew her. Saint John's family funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
