Joan S Darnell

DARNELL, JOAN S. Joan Sandford Darnell, a resident of Elkton, FL., age 86 peacefully departed this life with dignity on Friday, December 13, 2019 with her loved ones by her side in St. Augustine, FL. Joan was born on January 8, 1933, in Delaware County, (Drexel Hill) PA., to the late Mark Gurley Sandford and Mildred Moore Penuel of Lansdowne, PA. A Trailblazer honoree, Joan followed her dream by joining the USAF and serving her country during the Korean War Era as Airman 2nd Class with service in Ft Knox, KY. & Scott AFB, IL. After being honorably discharged, she worked as a sales store clerk, hospital ward clerk, grocery checker, cashier, newspaper carrier, and dog breeder, groomer and dog show competitor. Joan moved to St Augustine, FL in June 2005 in her later years. Joan Loved Birds! Joan Loved to Shop! Joan Loved Works by Norman Rockwell. She is preceded in death by her Great Grandson Nathan Winegar. She leaves to cherish her memories: loving & humble husband of 55 years, Garnett Ray Darnell; 5 natural born children, sons: Dale (Marijane) Darnell, Waterloo, IL., Darrell Glen (Alice) Darnell, Hampstead, NC., Dean S. (Norma Brown) Darnell, Ballwin, MO., daughters: Holly Diane Darnell (Jeff) Shumate, Jacksonville, FL., Mary Zoller (John) Lightner, Young Harris, GA.; Granddaughter, Tina Darnell (Matt) Winegar and 2 Great-Grandsons, Noah and Sam Winegar all of Johnson City, TN. and a whole host of other relatives and many special friends. A special Thank you to the staff at Clyde Lassen State Veterans Nursing Home, for being there for her when we could not; the staff of the ICU of Flagler Hospital and staff of Bailey’s Hospice Care Center, St. Augustine. Joan will be missed for her Wit. She is missed by all who knew her and will live in the hearts of her family, friends and many loved ones. Her wishes were to be cremated and at her request, family and friends will gather to celebrate the fullness of her life in Kingsport, TN. with a memorial funeral service. Her final resting place with her spouse will be held at the East Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park, Kingsport, TN on April 25, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Joan’s name to Alzheimer's Assn at ALZ.org. St. Johns Family Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the Darnell family.
