James Douglas Palmer

James Douglas Palmer May 28, 1933 - July 19, 2015 James Douglas "Doug" Palmer passed away peacefully 07/19/2015, after an extremely long and hard fought battle against Multiple Myeloma. He rejoins his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Cleo Palmer, in eternity forever. He was predeceased by his son, Christopher L. Palmer, daughters Alicia M. Palmer, and Laura J. Palmer, his parents Katie and Edward, and sister, Luetta Talbot. He is survived by daughters, Angela L. Froitzheim (N. Paul Froitzheim), Regina B. Palmer, sister, Patsy Kierleber (Victor Kierleber), grandchildren Mark Halloran, R. Douglas Jackson, Thomas R. McMahon, Karah L. Froitzheim, Aaron J.P. McMahon, Julia S. McMahon, several great grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. Doug was born and raised in Texas. He excelled as a child and became an Eagle Scout by 16 and graduated highschool at 17. He joined the Army and ended up being stationed in Philadelphia where he met his eternal mate Cleo at a dance where she spent most of the night in the bathroom trying to avoid him. His luck prevailed and the rest is history as they say. They moved from Texas to Saint Augustine in the early 1960's for a business opportunity and ended up at 28 San Marco Ave for the next 30+ years, running a successful service/gas station. Palmer's Gulf (Palmer's BP later) was well known by all the locals who traded with Doug. He was old school and his station maintained a full service isle that made him wildly famous with the older ladies until his retirement in 1996. He also continued to maintain a warehouse storage facility that is still in operation. He was an original lifetime member of the St. Augustine Yacht Club, life member of the Elks Lodge #829, and remained active with local Boy Scout Troops for many years. He had a love of Photography, Sailing, Wood Working, and Car restorations that he pursued until the very end of his journey. Funeral services will be held 9:00 a.m. Monday July 27, 2015 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Interment will follow in San Lorenzo Cemetery. A Vigil service will be held 4:00 p.m. Sunday July 26, 2015 at St. Johns Family Funeral Home with visitation continuing until 6:00 p.m. St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
