Gregory Lee McDonald

Gregory Lee “Greg” “Catfish” McDonald, age 69, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2022 at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House. He was born October 11, 1953, in Covington, Kentucky, to Albert and Margaret (Coomes) McDonald. He moved with his family to St. Augustine at the age of 12 years old and was a 1971 graduate of St. Augustine High School. After high school Greg enjoyed life as a surfer, lifeguard, bouncer and spent most of his spare time fishing. In 1987, he went to work with his brother, David, forming McDonald Brothers Construction. Greg was a highly skilled carpenter and highly sought out for his work. In the late 1990’s Greg transitioned to work in auto sales. He worked for Phil Genovar at Dixie Customs and in the early 2000’s he went to work for Bozard Ford as a salesman and Commercial Accounts Manager. Greg’s outgoing personality, and tireless work ethic made him a natural salesman. He loved his work and was always selling. Greg achieved status as one of the top salesman in the country for Ford Motor Company for many years despite not having a sales team. Greg grew up Catholic and was a member of the Cathedral Parish. He was an avid Gator Fan and continued to enjoy fishing for most of his life. More than anything Greg was a loving and supportive father, and beloved son, brother and friend to many. He will be deeply missed. Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Albert & Margaret, and a sister, Barbara M. Puhl. He is survived by his daughters, Kyra Smith (Aaron) of Jacksonville, Erin McDonald of St. Augustine, Katie Shaffer of Bunnell; sons, Gregory L. McDonald, Jr., Albert “AJ” McDonald, and Michael McDonald (Kassanna) all of St. Augustine; a brother, David McDonald (Lisa) of St. Augustine; sisters, Teresa Mims (Rease), Laurie Vaill (Charles), and Mary Agnes Urcuioli all of St. Augustine, Fl.; grandchildren, Hunter, Mya, Tyler, Bella, “J.D” and Matanzas Pearl; and a great granddaughter, Amelia. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at St. Johns Family Funeral Home with Father Tom Willis officiating. A reception will follow at 4 pm at the Rod & Gun Club. St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
