Gayle Wasson Greene

Gayle Wasson Greene, age 80, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2024, at UF Health St. Johns. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, on May 29, 1944, she was the beloved daughter of the late Louis and Orel Wasson. Gayle spent the majority of her life in St. Augustine, where she became an integral part of the community. A proud graduate of St. Augustine High School Class of 1962, Gayle continued her education at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, where she earned her nursing degree in 1965. Her compassionate care touched many lives during her career, with dedicated service at St. Augustine General Hospital, Flagler Hospital, and Memorial Hospital. On November 6, 1965, Gayle married her soulmate, Steve Greene, whom she met at Jacksonville University. Together, they built a loving family and a life filled with cherished memories. Gayle was a lifelong member of the St. Augustine Church of Christ, where she actively participated in church activities and formed lasting friendships. Beyond her professional and spiritual commitments, Gayle had a passion for cooking, gardening, and reading. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, where her warmth and nurturing spirit will be fondly remembered. A memorial service to honor Gayle’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at the St. Augustine Church of Christ, 2900 Lewis Speedway, St. Augustine, FL 32084, followed by a luncheon. Gayle is survived by her children: Stephen F. Greene, Jr. of Snow Camp, NC; Gregory Greene (Chelle) of Nashville, TN; Kevin Greene (Tracie) of St. Augustine; and Kristen Slaughter (Jon) of Orlando. She also leaves behind the “daughter of her heart,” Elizabeth “Buffy” Ford (Johnny) of St. Augustine; brothers Jack Wasson (Maureen) of Jacksonville and Steve Wasson (Dianne) of St. Augustine; grandchildren Kaitlyn (Josh) Bolena of Wahiawa, Hawaii; Karley Greene of Memphis, TN; Shaina McHugh of Lincoln, England; Ashley Greene of McLean, VA; Mason Greene and Aussie Greene of Nashville; Blade Greene of Orlando; Alexandra Dunn of Eustis; and Cassandra Slaughter of Orlando; Cameo Grimes and Noah Grimes of St. Augustine; and Courtney Ford and John Ford, Jr. of St. Augustine; and great-grandchildren Josiah and Aella Bolena of Wahiawa, Hawaii; and Kayson Ford of St. Augustine. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stephen F. Greene, Sr., and a great-grandson, Eli Thayer Bolena. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gayle’s memory to the ministry of Graham McDonald, Scottish minister and friend of Steve and Gayle’s, through his sponsoring church, the Fayetteville Church of Christ, 879 Redwine Road, Fayetteville, GA 30215.
