Fannie Elizabeth Chapman

Fannie Elizabeth Chapman August 6, 1927 - October 27, 2010 Fannie Elizabeth "Betty" Chapman, age 83, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2010, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born and grew up in Boone, NC, and met her husband to be, Melvin Chapman, on a bus in Portsmouth, Va., where Melvin was serving in the U.S. Navy and she was working a summer job in a drug store during W.W. II. Betty married Melvin on June 4, 1947 and moved to St. Augustine, where they have lived since. In partnership with her husband, Betty owned and operated Melvin's Repair Shop for many years and was very active in the life of her church and community. She served as President of the Evelyn Hamblin PTA, worked in the baby nursery at Ancient City Baptist Church for over 20 years, and was one of the founding members of Moultrie Baptist Church where she taught the Adult Women's Sunday School Class and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Ancient City Auto Club, Model T Club of America, Amaryllis Garden Club and was a 4-H Leader for many years. She is survived by her husband, C. Melvin Chapman, Sr. of St. Augustine; children, Melvin Chapman, Jr. (Linda), Brenda Barber, Robert Chapman (Marie) and Donna Chapman, all of St. Augustine, grandchildren, Amy Szczepanik (David), Angie Mashburn (Mark), Bradley Grace (Sarah), Alexander Grace, Aaron Barber (Denise), Ryan Chapman, & ReAnn Cox (Justin), great grandchildren, Brittany, Bryce, Ethan, Riley, Wyatt, Kate & Olivia. She is also survived by sisters, Nancy Brown of Va. Leona Maready (Linwood) of N.C., Nell Porter (Clint) of St. Augustine, Bettye Miller of N.C., brothers, Thomas Miller (Anna Mae) and Hansford Miller (Edna), all of Boone, N.C., & Richard Miller (Quinn) of Ga. She was preceded in death by a brother, Malcolm Miller, and a sister, Lovely Danner, both of Boone, N.C. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 30th at Moultrie Baptist Church, 3699 U.S. 1, South in St. Augustine, with Rev. Michael Mott and Rev. Sandy Colley officiating. Interment will follow at San Lorenzo Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 8pm on Friday at St. Johns Family Funeral Home.
