Edwin Eggleston Sage, III

"Ted" Edwin Eggleston Sage, III passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. His wife and son were with him. Ted was born in Hartford, Connecticut on April 10, 1947 to Edwin Eggleston Sage, Jr. and Julia Wootten Scott Sage. Ted came to St. Augustine in 1970 to attend Flagler College and quickly fell in love with the town and its people. He earned an AA degree at Stevens College in Fitchburg, Massachusetts and a BA at Flagler College in its first graduating class of 1972. There were thirty-three graduates in that first class, of which only two were male. Ted called dibs on "first male graduate" and ever afterwards referred to himself proudly and The First Male Graduate of Flagler College. After graduating, Ted joined the cast of CROSS AND SWORD, Florida's Official State Play and continued as part of the cast and crew for seventeen seasons. He acted many different parts in Cross and Sword including the comic lead Basilio Bonito, the Governor of Cuba, technical staff, and others. In other productions at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, Ted acted, worked the sound board and the lighting board. Ted also was a regular actor/crew for the Limelight Theatre in its early days working with Tom and Jean Rahner and Anne Kraft. Ted was the Assistant Chief Announcer for Marineland of Florida for eight years, where he had a great relationship with the show dolphins, including Nellie, with whom he shared a mutual affection. After leaving Marineland, Ted spent eight and a half years as an on air personality with WFOY/WUVU radio, where he was sometimes referred to, much to his chagrin, as Ted Sage, the Afternoon Rage. Ted spent twenty-three years with the Old Town Trolleys as a tour guide/trolley driver Conductor. He researched all of the information that he gave on those tours, making sure it was accurate. He loved St. Augustine and sharing it and its history with visitors. Ted was one of the original walking Ghost Tour guides before Old Town Trolleys introduced their Ghost and Gravestones tour, after which he worked exclusively for Old Town Trolleys/Ghost and Gravestones. Ted was an avid skier and a member of the Atlanta Ski Club for many years. He was also into car racing and sports cars. He loved and had great compassion for animals, especially cats. After a nine-week's medical leave, Ted's wife informed Old Town Trolleys that his doctor had cleared him to go back to work. She was somewhat taken aback when the office manager said, "OH THANK GOD!!" Ted had been feeding an army of stray and dumped cats that survived in the area of the Old Jail. When he failed to show up, the cats would march across the parking lot at five o'clock expecting (and getting) food from the staff. They were glad to turn the job back over to Ted. Ted's family history was very colorful. His father was a B-17 bomber pilot instructor during World War II. The war ended before he was deployed to Europe. His mother was a passenger on the SS Athenia which was torpedoed by a German U-boat on September 3, 1939 hours after Britain declared war on Germany. That story can be found in the book, TOMORROW NEVER CAME by Max Caulfield. One of Ted's greatest joys was to bring laughter to others. Over the years, many people have stated that Ted made them smile and laugh in their dark moments. He will be greatly missed. Ted is leaves behind his wife, Jo, sons: Justin and Walker, St. Augustine; daughter: Jessica Kaye Lewis , Jacksonville; sisters: Julia Wootten Henry (Michael),Reno, Nevada; Treb Kimble, Seal Beach California; Shannon Herzfeld, Silver Spring, Maryland; Ashlee Wyatt Sage (Tim Smith), New Hampshire; Leslee Sage, Manchester, Connecticut and ten nieces and nephews. Ted was predeceased by his sister Sharon Stafford Cooper, Sante Fe, New Mexico.
