Douglas Rhine "Doug" Straatsma

Douglas Rhine "Doug" Straatsma, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, at the age of 71. Born on September 17, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, Doug spent his formative years in Dearborn, where he developed a love for life, laughter, and community. A proud graduate of Fordson High School with the class of 1973, Doug continued his education at Wayne State University, earning a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice in 1978. He dedicated the majority of his professional life to serving the public, working for U.S. Customs where he enjoyed a distinguished 38-year career, ultimately retiring on Jan. 1, 2016 as Port Director in Jacksonville. In retirement, Doug channeled his passion for helping others into volunteer work, particularly in the Cardiac Pulmonary Rehab Unit at the Mayo Clinic where he volunteered over 2,000 hours. His generosity extended beyond his immediate community; in the summer of 2017, he embarked on a Sea to Sea, 4000 mile, bicycle ride from Vancouver to Halifax with the organization World Renew, raising funds to combat hunger and promote sustainable solutions for those in need. A devoted member of Mandarin Presbyterian Church for over 25 years, Doug's faith was a cornerstone of his life. During his years at MPC he served as a Deacon, a member of the nominating committee, lead usher, headed up MUGS (Men under God’s Service), volunteered with the food bank and Meals on Wheels as well as serving as a Stephens Minister. He assisted in building over 20 Habitat for Humanity homes including ones sponsored by MPC. He is remembered not only for his many contributions but also for his joyful spirit-his penchant for jokes and his ability to make others smile spoke volumes of his character. Doug embodied selflessness, often putting the needs of others above his own, which endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Doug was preceded in death by his first wife, Patti Straatsma, his sister, Judy VanderArk and a brother in law, John Heetderks. He leaves behind his loving wife, Treva Straatsma; sons, Dan and Mike Straatsma, both of Jacksonville; his brother, John Straatsma and his wife Barbara of Grand Rapids, Mi.; his sister, Joyce Heetderks of South Lion, Mi.; stepchildren, Jason Dunning of Milwaukee, WI, Jeremy Dunning and Rebecca Dunning, both of St. Johns; his cherished grandchildren, Logan Vollink, Liam Dunning, and twins Mateo and Hendrix Studard, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. His presence will be profoundly missed in their lives, as well as by countless friends and acquaintances who had the joy of experiencing his warmth and kindness. A celebration of Doug's life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at Mandarin Presbyterian Church.
